The seamless-versus-welded question is common in titanium procurement, but it is often framed too simply. Neither route is automatically the right answer for every exchanger, condenser or process line. The correct choice starts with the equipment design and governing specification, then considers dimensions, service conditions, inspection requirements, availability and total project cost.
How the two routes differ
Under ASTM B338, seamless tube is produced from hollow billet by cold-reducing or cold-drawing processes that yield conforming tubing. Welded tube is produced from flat-rolled product by automatic arc welding, followed by the processing and testing required by the specification.

Start with the governing documents
If a drawing, datasheet, owner specification or equipment code states a required manufacturing route, procurement should follow it. If both seamless and welded are permitted, ask suppliers to identify the route in their quotation so the bids remain technically transparent.
Do not compare price before normalizing scope
A lower unit price can be misleading if one quote excludes NDT reports, tighter dimensional tolerances, fixed-length cutting, special packaging or third-party inspection. Create a bid tabulation that normalizes the technical scope before comparing price and lead time.
Questions to include in the RFQ
- Is seamless, welded or either route acceptable?
- What standard and edition govern the tube?
- What grade is required?
- What OD, wall thickness and length are required?
- Are fixed lengths or random lengths acceptable?
- What NDT and pressure-test requirements apply?
- Are special end conditions, surface requirements or cleanliness controls required?
- What certificates and traceability records must be delivered?
For heat exchangers, think beyond the tube itself
The exchanger fabricator also cares about tube-to-tubesheet assembly, dimensional repeatability, end preparation, tube cleanliness and documentation. If the procurement is for a replacement bundle, provide the approved tube sheet drawing and any lessons learned from the existing equipment rather than relying on nominal dimensions alone.

For each supplier, record route, grade, standard edition, OD/wall/length, quantity basis, test scope, certificate scope, packing, delivery term, lead time and deviations. This makes the technical differences visible before commercial negotiation and avoids awarding on a price that does not represent the same deliverable.
What to record in the bid tabulation
For welded tube, visual appearance is only one part of quality control. The governing product specification and project inspection plan should define the relevant nondestructive, mechanical and pressure-test requirements. Procurement should request the corresponding reports when traceable evidence is required.
Do not use weld appearance as the only acceptance test
Even when both routes are technically permitted, size range and production planning can make one route easier to source for a particular order. Ask for realistic production lead time and raw-material availability rather than assuming a universal advantage. For urgent replacement work, a technically acceptable alternative route may reduce schedule risk, but only after engineering approval.
